Hand-colored quarter-plate ambrotype in thermoplastic case of the Simmons sisters, daughters of Thomas Simmons and Sarah Homans Thwing Simmons. The ambrotype depicts, left to right, Sarah Mehitable Simmons, Elsie Thwing Simmons (later Adams), Mary Simmons (later Hunnewell), and Martha Simmons (later Homans). The photograph was taken ca. 1854-1855 by an unknown photographer. Enclosed is a poem written by the sisters about the ambrotype and signed by them.
